Summer is approaching, and with it the big question of what to pack in baby's beach bag. Sunscreen, hat, swim diaper... and toys? This is where parents often find themselves hastily buying whatever they can find at the local supermarket — plastics that break in two days, colors that wash off after the first rinse, buckets too small or too large for little hands.
As Gabriel's dad, I seriously considered this before our first summer at the beach. What I learned: baby beach toys are not something you can just improvise.
Here's my selection for summer 2026 — products I chose with the same filter as everything else on this site: would I unhesitatingly put them in Gabriel's hands?
At what age can baby play with beach toys?
From 6 months old, a baby can enjoy the beach — provided they are well-situated and in the shade. The first toys at this age are primarily sensory: touching the sand, grasping a light shovel, exploring a new texture.
From 12-18 months, motor development comes into play: filling a bucket, pouring water, making piles. This is the ideal age to introduce a suitable beach set.
At 2-3 years old, symbolic play emerges: building a castle, digging, molding. Toys can be more elaborate.
What we look for in a baby beach toy
Before going into detail, here are the criteria I consistently apply:
- Safe material: BPA-free, phthalate-free — especially when baby puts everything in their mouth
- Ergonomics: handles adapted for small hands, light weight
- Durability: low-grade plastic cracks as soon as you press on it or it's exposed to the sun
- Easy to clean: sand gets everywhere, toys must be able to be completely rinsed
- Reasonable size: it must fit in the beach bag without taking up all the space
Our baby beach toy selection for summer 2026
1. The flexible silicone beach set
Food-grade silicone is what I've used for Gabriel since the beginning — for teething rings, cups, and now for beach toys. Flexible, unbreakable, dishwasher safe, and the colors don't fade.
A set including a bucket, shovel, rake, and mold is ideal for 12 months and up. The flexibility of silicone allows baby to easily unmold their creations without frustration — and in practice, that changes everything.
Ideal for: 12 months – 3 years
2. Sand molds in various shapes
Starfish, crab, seashell... sand molds are simple but incredibly effective at keeping a child occupied on the beach. The principle is universal, but the quality varies greatly.
What we look for: clean edges that allow for easy unmolding, sufficient depth for the shape to be recognizable, and bright colors (to easily find them in the bag).
Ideal for: 18 months – 4 years
3. The small baby watering can
A baby-sized watering can is a multi-purpose toy on the beach: watering the sand to wet it, filling the bucket, playing with water at the seaside. It's also one of the first toys that trains the "pouring" motion — which is excellent for coordination.
To prioritize: a wide, easy-to-grasp handle, a spout with small holes (so it looks like a shower rather than a stream), and a maximum capacity of 300 to 500 ml.
Ideal for: 12 months – 3 years
4. The beach toy storage net
It's not a toy, but it's essential. A fine mesh net allows you to collect toys at the end of the day, shake them to remove sand, and let them dry when you get home. Practical for parents, fun for children — Gabriel loves to "tidy up" his toys in the net himself.
Ideal for: all ages
5. Floating water toys
For families going to the pool, lake, or entering the water at the seaside, floating toys are an excellent addition. Small boats, floating animals, diving rings for older children — they stimulate aquatic curiosity and help demystify contact with water.
Beware of small detachable parts for children under 3 years old.
Ideal for: 18 months – 4 years (depending on the model)
What I avoid for the beach with baby
A few things to keep in mind before buying:
- "Budget" rigid plastic sets: they yellow, crack in the heat, and the edges become sharp
- Toys with small parts: sand + small parts = lost parts and risk of ingestion
- Overly heavy toys: at the end of the day, the parent is carrying them — better to think about it beforehand
- Toys with paint: in contact with seawater and sun, some paints chip off

All the beach toys selected for Gabriel & Compagnie are available in our Summer 2026 collection. Every product goes through the same filter: would I put it in Gabriel's hands? If the answer isn't an immediate yes, it doesn't make it into the catalog.
Have a great summer with your little ones. 🌊
